Gravestone cleaning: wash with a dedicated tombstone cleaner and brush, remove nitrate stains if present, let the stone dry fully, then apply a silicone tombstone impregnation in two coats (wet-on-wet) and wipe off any excess.

How can you prevent algae, moss and dirt from growing on gravestones?

Safe cleaning + silicone protection is the long-term solution.

First, remove biological contamination and dirt using plenty of water, a good brush and a dedicated tombstone cleaner. High-pressure washing can help, but avoid holding the nozzle too close to the stone surface.

If you see white, salt-like deposits (nitrate stains / efflorescence), treat the surface after basic washing with a nitrate remover, brush gently, then rinse thoroughly.

Once the gravestone is clean and fully dry, apply a silicone tombstone impregnation. This reduces water uptake, keeps the stone drier, and slows down the return of algae and moss.

The effect of impregnation:

English narration (voiceover) – suggested script:
“In this short video you can see the effect of silicone impregnation on a tombstone surface.
After treatment, water does not soak in – it beads up and runs off immediately.
Because the surface stays drier, algae, moss and dirt have a much harder time sticking and growing.
The stone can still ‘breathe’ through water vapour diffusion, but liquid water is blocked.
After proper cleaning, impregnation is the key step for long-lasting protection.”

We used the above products to clean the 1956 memorial on Kossuth Square (next to the Parliament).

In brief: the solution
1. Wash: use a tombstone cleaner, lots of water and a brush.
2. If needed: remove nitrate stains with a nitrate remover, then rinse well.
3. Dry: wait until the stone is completely dry.
4. Protect: apply tombstone impregnation in two coats (wet-on-wet) and wipe off any excess.
Tip: always test on a small, less visible area first, especially on sensitive natural stones.
Common mistakes
  • only rinsing with water (without brushing) → deposits remain in pores
  • using aggressive acids on sensitive stone → etching / dull spots
  • impregnating a damp surface → patchiness / weak protection
  • applying one coat only → shorter service life
  • leaving excess product on the surface → streaks / sticky film
